“Unexpected Encounter”, refers to a group of artists and their works coming together by chance without prior arrangement. Obviously, it represents in particular the aesthetic states of the ways and concepts of such artists as Sui Jianguo, Wang Guofeng, Shi Jinsong, Liang Shuo and Shao Kang. The exhibited works concentrates on various aspects, such as the noumenon of art itself, the analysis of sociology, the translation and amplification of everyday life and emphasis on the organic connection between the work and the specific site. Here, the unexpected get-together of the artists stresses on their respective subjective consciousness -- independency, creativity, individuality, subversiveness and non-contextulization. Therefore, as a curator, I would refrain from interfering with the art works and the exhibition site as much as possible. This is a show to pay respect to the artists’ individual subjectivity and creativity whilst at the same time a show to commend their artistic values and the significance of their concepts.
Thus, with this special background, the task of curating only makes use of the concept of the “Unexpected Encounter” and integrates the motives and ideas of the artists.
